Open de France Barnes : et les finalistes sont...
Quatre demi-finales où dix nations étaient représentées, deux mixtes pour le compte de l’Open de France Barnes, et deux « dames » pour l’Open féminin et quatre beaux finalistes : Yves Delorme (FRA) et Augustinus Bader (LUX) chez les femmes et Mungo (FRA) vs. La Fija Sandbox (ARG) chez les hommes. Le programme de dimanche sera un régal, la cerise sur le gâteau de trois semaines de compétition qui aura tenu toutes ses promesses côté beauté du jeu, compétitivité, ambiance et convivialité.
La fête va donc s’achever sur ces deux finales (et même une troisième en prime, celle du Trophée Castel) au cours d’un programme dominical particulièrement riche, car à côté du sport, le Polo Club de Chantilly s’est mis en quatre pour accueillir le public. Mais parlons sport d’abord et de ces quatre demi-finales, à l’image de la plupart des matchs de ces tournois : du suspense, du jeu spectaculaire, de l’émotion, mais des victoires bien plus nettes que lors des quarts.

La première demi-finale opposait chez les femmes l’équipe du club Championne de France, sous les couleurs d’Yves Delorme, à une autre équipe locale, Polo Angels, qui jouait pour le compte de la capitaine allemande Nina Frühauf. Un match où l’Australienne Millie Hine a su tirer le meilleur parti de ses trois coéquipières françaises. Un véritable jeu d’équipe qui a permis à Yves Delorme de mener de bout en bout sans être vraiment inquiété malgré la guerre de tranchée menée par son adversaire.
La seconde rencontre était une affaire bénéluxienne opposant l’équipe luxembourgeoise Augustinus Bader menée par la championne argentine Lia Salvo à la formation concoctée par la Néerlandaise Annita van der Hoeven autour de la crack britannique Hazel Jackson. Mais Lia Salvo, qui connait parfaitement son amie Hazel Jackson, « avait un plan » qui a permis à Augustinus Bader de maitriser son match malgré une timide résistance de La Monarquia – Nipas en seconde période, mais pas d’inquiétude pour Augustinus Bader qui retrouvera Yves Delorme en finale dimanche prochain à 12H00. Les deux équipes se sont affrontées en match de poule où les Françaises de Millie Hine avaient largement dominé Lia Salvo et son équipe internationale, 11 à 5… mais en polo, on le sait, rien n’est jamais joué d’avance.

Chez les hommes, deux équipes françaises avaient leur chance d’atteindre la finale. Kazak, mené par le champion d’Argentine Nicolas Pieres, avait affaire à un rude adversaire avec le club argentin de La Fija Sandbox dont le capitaine est… Français… et le tenant du titre est tombé face au duo infernal Fran Elizalde, meilleur marqueur du tournoi à ce stade (33 goals) et Rufino Bensadon, auteur de 6 goals cet après-midi. Après avoir fait jeu égal avec son adversaire pendant deux périodes, Kazak s’est ensuite laissé déborder malgré de spectaculaires actions de Nico Pieres.
Enfin, c’est passé pour Mungo face à Jolly Roger. Là-aussi, l’équipe du Suédois Niclas Johanson n’a jamais vraiment semblé en mesure de donner la réplique à une équipe française qui est montée en puissance tout au long de l’été pour, semble-t-il, arriver à son meilleur rendement pour cette phase finale. Clairement, Lolo Bayugar et Aïti Garros ont élevé leur niveau de jeu, mis en confiance par la solidité de leur back français, Pierre Henri Ngoumou en défense. Cette demi-finale s’est ainsi transformée en une fête pour Mungo (12-7) à laquelle le capitaine français Ulysse Eisentchteter ne s’est pas privé de prendre part en inscrivant ses deux goals.
Deux grandes finales en perspective pour une journée qui s’annonce magique et qui commencera à 11H00 par l’ouverture du village où pas moins de dix-sept stands et quatre food-trucks attendront les visiteurs, mais pas seulement puisque des animations sont également au programme : la fanfare de la Garde Républicaine (majestueux), un moment de magie équestre avec le show d’Alizée Froment (à ne pas manquer), l’arrivée du Rallye de l’Open (pour les amateurs de voitures anciennes), un mini-match d’enfants sur poneys Shetland (absolument craquant), et la finale du mini Open de France avec des enfants un peu plus âgés et espoirs de demain. Les grandes finales auront lieu pour leur part à 12H00 (Open féminin), 15H30 (Open Barnes) et 17H30 (Trophée Castel). L’entrée est gratuite, donc pourquoi se priver d’une telle somptueuse sortie ?

Open de France Barnes: Sunday, the day of the apotheosis
Four semi-finals involving ten nations, two mixed teams for the Open de France Barnes and two "ladies" teams for the women’s Open, making up four fine finalists: Yves Delorme (FRA) and Augustinus Bader (LUX) for the women and Mungo (FRA) against La Fija Sandbox (ARG) for the men. Sunday's programme is sure to be a treat, the icing on the cake of a three-week competition that has lived up to all its promises in terms of beauty of the game, competitiveness, atmosphere and conviviality.
These two finals (and a third, the Castel Trophy, as a bonus) will bring the festivities to a close with a particularly rich Sunday programme, as the Chantilly Polo Club has made a point of welcoming the public as well as the sport.
But first let's talk about the sport and the four semi-finals, which were like most of the games of these tournaments: exciting, spectacular, emotional, but with much clearer victories than in the quarters.
The first women's semi-final pitted the French champions, team Yves Delorme, against another local team, Polo Angels, with German captain Nina Frühauf. It was a match in which Australian Millie Hine made the most of her three French teammates, a true team effort that allowed Yves Delorme to lead from start to finish without really being troubled, despite their opponents fighting until the very end.
The second game was a Benelux affair, pitting Luxembourg's Augustinus Bader, led by Argentinian champion Lia Salvo, against the team assembled by Dutchwoman Annita van der Hoeven around British crack Hazel Jackson. But Lia Salvo, who knows her friend Hazel Jackson inside out, "had a plan" that allowed Augustinus Bader to control the match despite some tentative resistance from La Monarquia - Nipas in the second half, but no worries for Augustinus Bader, who will meet Yves Delorme in the final next Sunday at 12.00. The two teams met in the qualifying phase, where Millie Hine's French team beat Lia Salvo and her international team 11-5... but as we know, nothing is ever certain in polo.
Barnes Open: an unprecedented final
In the mixed competition, two French teams had a chance of reaching the final. Kazak, led by Argentinian champion Nicolas Pieres, faced a tough opponent in the form of Argentinian club La Fija Sandbox, whose captain is French... The defending champions fell victim to the infernal duo of Fran Elizalde, the tournament's top scorer (33 goals), and Rufino Bensadon, who scored 6 goals this afternoon. After keeping their opponents at bay for two periods, Kazak fell behind despite some spectacular efforts from Nico Pieres.
Finally, Mungo won their ticket to the final against Jolly Roger. Once again, Sweden's Niclas Johanson's team never really seemed in a position to put up a fight against a French team that had spent the summer building up its strength in order, it seemed, to be in the best possible shape for these finals. Lolo Bayugar and Alti Garros clearly raised their game, boosted by the solidity of French defence player Pierre Henri Ngoumou. As a result, the semi-final turned out to be a treat for Mungo (12-7), with French captain Ulysse Eisentchteter actively contributing to this victory with his two goals.
Two big finals on the horizon for a day that promises to be magical, starting at 11.00 a.m. with the inauguration of the village, where no fewer than seventeen stands and four food stalls await the visitors, but that is not all, as entertainment is also on the programme: fhe fanfares of the Garde Républicaine (majestic), a moment of equestrian magic with the show of Alizée Froment (not to be missed), the arrival of the Rallye de l'Open (for vintage car fans), the mini-game opposing kids on Shetland ponies (absolutely cracking) and the final of the Mini Open de France with slightly older children and the future stars. The big finals take place at 12.00 (Women's Open), 15.30 (Barnes Open) and 17.30 (Castel Trophy). Admission is free, so why miss out on the big day?
